People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates. Sometime in the mid 1980's, a number of elements that existed since the universe began coalesced into a carbon-based lifeform that would eventually gain sentience and become yours truly. I was born at 7pm on the dot and almost on my grandmother's birthday (a disappointment she never let my mom live down). I was named after my father's grandmother, Kathleen, who lived to be almost 100. Most of the women in my family have enjoyed exceptional longevity; I hope good luck and genetics will grant me many long years as a crotchety old person. I have heritage from all four corners of Europe - my bloodline has travelled over Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Scandanavia, England, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The Mediterranean genes definitely won the fight for dominance, though. Growing up I was an eccentric kid and a bit of a goody-two-shoes who was far more liked by the adults around me than my peers. The real me has always been a little a bit rough around the edges, sardonic, witty, ambitious, not always open about my feelings, and occasionally unable to get outside my own head. It took me a long time to learn how to be comfortable in my own skin, but I'm still not sure I've grown into it either. What is the significance of the name "Time & Motion", you may ask? It is a reference that could be applied to a number of interests very near and dear to my heart. I am fascinated by the universe (especially the crazy, theoretical side of physics), and for me at least the name evokes ideas of time travel or spaceships navigating through multiple dimensions. Additionally, time and motion are closely linked concepts in the art world, particularly in animation. There is a spiritual side to it as well, with lots of philosophizing about the nature of time and whether we're constantly moving towards a future that doesn't exist yet or forever running around in circles. Additionally, it's a song from one of my favorite bands. But ultimately there's no big pretentious reason for it, I just think it sounds cool. |
